Have you ever stopped to consider what true, Christ like love really looks like? In the English language, we use one simple word “love” for everything from a favorite food to a deep, lifelong commitment. But the Bible, originally written in Greek, uses several different words, and one stands out as the very heartbeat of our faith and the foundation of The Hope Project Ministry: Agape.
What is Agape Love?
Agape is the highest, most pure form of love. It is not an emotion driven by feelings or attraction. Instead, it is a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional act of the will.
It is not Eros (romantic love) or Philia (brotherly love/friendship). Agape is a choice, a determined commitment to seek the ultimate well~being of another, regardless of their worthiness, actions, or response.
Agape is God’s nature. The Bible tells us plainly, “God is love”(1 John 4:8) The love God has for us sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us “ while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8) is the ultimate example of Agape. It is love unmerited and unconditional.
Agape in Action: The Hope Project’s Care
At The Hope Project Ministry, we are motivated by the love of Christ and are called to bring justice to a broken world. We see Agape love as the fuel for our mission:
It is Unconditional: The women and girls we serve, survivors of sex trafficking, come to us with deep wounds and complex needs. Their past does not define their worth to God, and it does not define their worth to us. Our commitment to their healing and empowerment is rooted in an unconditional love that hold no record of wrongs.
It is Sacrificial: Agape isn’t passive; it’s active. It is demonstrated by giving our time, resources, compassion, and timeless effort to restore what was stolen. It is the long, patient, and kind work described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, which always “protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
It is Justice Seeking: True love demands action against oppression. We are committed showing God’s love by advocating for justice, intervening through mentoring and education and, working toward a world where the suffering from sex trafficking ends.
Living Out The Greatest Love
We are not capable of generating the is divine love on our own. It is the Holy Spirit who “has been poured out into our hearts” (Romans 5:5).
The challenge for us all is to continually choose to let this Agape love flow from through us. It means:
Loving the unlovable.
Forgiving the person who has wronged you.
Prioritizing someone else’s need over your own comfort.
This selfless, beautiful, and demanding love is the Hope we offer. It is the love that heals. It is the love that empowers. It is the only love that truly changes the world.
